How we measure AI visibility: the GoAhead Answer Loop
AI visibility is measurable. You take the real questions your buyers ask, type them into each AI engine the way a customer would, record who gets mentioned and which sources the engine cited, and repeat on a schedule. This page documents exactly how we do it.

What "AI visibility" actually means
AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, an AI assistant mentions or cites your business when someone asks it a question you should be the answer to.
Classic SEO measures positions on a results page. AI search has no positions — an assistant composes one answer and names a handful of businesses inside it. Either you are named, or you do not exist for that buyer. That makes the unit of measurement the mention, not the rank.
Three things matter for each answer: whether your brand is mentioned at all, whether it is recommended or merely listed, and which web sources the assistant leaned on to produce the answer. The third one is the lever — the sources tell you where to earn a presence.
Step 1 — Build the question set
We write 15 to 30 questions in the language a real buyer uses, not the language of keyword tools. For an agency in Mumbai that means "best digital marketing agency in Mumbai for SEO and AI SEO", "is GoAhead Digital any good", "which agency should a D2C brand in India hire for AI search", and comparison questions such as "Rajkar vs Infidigit for AI SEO".
Questions fall into four buckets: category questions (best X in city), brand questions (is X good, X reviews), comparison questions (X vs Y) and task questions (how do I get my business into ChatGPT answers). A healthy footprint shows up in all four; most businesses appear in none.
- Category: "best AI SEO agency in Mumbai"
- Brand: "GoAhead Digital Mumbai review — is it good"
- Comparison: "Infidigit vs Rajkar for AI search visibility"
- Task: "how to get cited by ChatGPT as a local business in India"
Step 2 — Ask each engine as a real user, not through an API
We type the questions into the actual products — ChatGPT in a temporary chat, Perplexity, Gemini and Google with AI Overviews — because that is what customers see. API calls return different answers from the consumer apps.
Two controls keep the reading honest. First, ChatGPT is always used in a temporary chat with memory off: an account that has previously discussed your business will happily recommend it, which is flattering and useless. Second, Google is queried with the country set to India so AI Overviews reflect the Indian index.
For every answer we save the full text, the list of businesses named, whether ours was named, and every source the engine cited. Perplexity shows sources openly; ChatGPT shows them when web search was used; Google AI Overviews link them inline.
Step 3 — Score it
Each question gets a score from 0 to 3: 0 for absent, 1 for mentioned in a list, 2 for recommended with a reason, 3 for the top recommendation. The average across the set is the AI visibility score, reported per engine and overall. We also log share of voice — how many of the named businesses are you versus competitors.
| Score | Meaning | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Absent | The engine names competitors; you are not in the answer |
| 1 | Listed | Named among "other options" without a reason |
| 2 | Recommended | Named with a specific strength the engine can articulate |
| 3 | Top pick | The first or "best overall" recommendation |
Step 4 — Map the sources
The sources an engine cites when it recommends a competitor are your to-do list. Most citations come from a small set of page types: third-party "best agencies" listicles, review platforms, comparison articles, dedicated service pages and press mentions.
When we ran this method on our own agency in September 2026, the neutral engines did not mention us once across five category questions, while every competitor that was mentioned traced back to the same handful of sources — Clutch and GoodFirms profiles, a few "top AI SEO agencies in Mumbai" roundups, and service pages with the city and the discipline in the title. That is a fixable list, and it is why we publish the exercise rather than hide it.
The mapping produces three columns: sources that cite competitors and could include you, page types you are missing on your own site, and brand facts that are inconsistent or ambiguous across the web (a shared name with another company is a common one).
Step 5 — Fix, then re-test on a fixed schedule
Fixes follow the map: answer-first service pages for each discipline and city, structured data that states who you are without ambiguity, presence on the review platforms and roundups the engines actually retrieve, and content that earns citations because it contains something quotable — a number, a method, a comparison.
Then the same question set is run again every month. AI answers move slowly and unevenly; a monthly cadence is frequent enough to see change and infrequent enough not to chase noise. The report shows the score per engine, which questions changed, and which new sources appeared.
Common questions
No. Nobody controls what a model says. What can be guaranteed is a transparent method, a baseline, the fixes, and a monthly re-test that shows whether the needle moved.
Tools are useful for scale, but they query APIs, which often answer differently from the consumer apps your customers use. We use both: manual real-user checks for truth, tooling for volume.
Typically two to four months after the source gaps are fixed, because engines need to re-crawl and third-party listings need to be published. Brand questions usually improve first; competitive category questions take longest.
It builds on it. Engines retrieve from the same web Google indexes, so strong rankings, clean technical foundations and real authority remain the raw material. AI visibility work adds answer-first structure, entity clarity and citation building on top.
